How to recover a sense of self protection and autonomy

While reading “The Artist Way” by Julia Cameron in week 10 and week 11 it talked about how to recover a sense of self protection and autonomy.

Recovering a sense of self protection you must be clear about who you are and what you are doing with no doubts so the energy can flow freely. But if you have doubt, and are unclear then you are blocking the energy to flow as it should. Everyone has some type of vice which helps distract us from what we should be doing. For example, I need to get this post done but instead I watch TV, or go eat. We use these as distractions or excuses to avoid our commitments. Gosh I have a few of them. ugh. Ok I am not perfect.

When we are faced with opportunities that may scare us some people tend to distract ourselves to avoid the unknown. Start noticing these moments to help you become aware so you could learn to work around this feeling. Do not shut down the flow of opportunity no matter the size.

I am so guilty of this and have become aware of the signs. One thing I learned is self care and its importance. I constantly do for others and not for myself. I always put my needs on the back burner. Not sure why I have not realized that my needs are just as important as others. They take care of themselves so why don’t I?

Saying no can be the ultimate self-care.

Shake off the guilt if you feel it after saying no. You owe it to yourself to say no sometimes. You must practice self protection in order to achieve self care. Your feelings matter. I truly believe practicing this will help build confidence in you which will help you realize the importance of self care.

You have to push through those things that you keep using as an excuse because it is blocking you from something new, unknown, or even extraordinary. It takes courage and grace to surrender and admit you’re blocking devices (pg 165 The Artist Way). All I say is become aware, take note of them.

  • Create boundaries
  • Say no to practice self care
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Stay consistent in your active approach
  • Remember there is room for everyone
  • Keep nudging forward
  • Do not judge so quickly
  • Be willing to make mistakes and let it guide you to the next thing

This is definitely something I need to do. I am not perfect for sure but I understand the importance of taking care of me.

In week 11 recovering a sense of autonomy it helps you examine ways you must nurture yourself and accept who you are as a creative.

I have many various talents. I enjoy my full time job as well as my play time as being a creative. Most importantly, I continue to show up for myself to follow through with commitments. I struggle at times to stay on course but I am aware of the signs of sabotage more now, and I am working through them more earlier than later.

Overall my takeaway of the two chapters were:

  • Focus on you and your needs.
  • Find new ways to build your strength and stay the course.
  • Pay attention to the signs and take a moment, step back, pause, and breathe before making any decisions.
  • You deserve to pamper yourself, you deserve it.

I am on the last chapter of the book and I learned so much about me. I do need to go back and do a deep dive into the weekly tasks. I have been on this journey of self care and have done so much for myself this far. What is the saying? Peel back the onion only to find more layers. Well, I am only uncovering the first few layers and there is so much more to learn.

Never stop learning! You are worth it.

Happy Holidays to all.

Have a great day.
